Abstract:
Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been listed as priority-controlled emerging contaminants owing to their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and associated ecological hazards. To investigate the distribution characteristics and sources of PPCPs in water and sediment of the main drainage ditches in Shizuishan City, the concentrations of 52 PPCPs in water and sediment samples were determined using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS).The spatial distribution of PPCPs in the water-sediment system was analyzed, and correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were utilized to identify the sources of PPCPs in the two media. The results indicated that PPCPs were prevalent in water and sediment, with ∑PPCPs concentrations ranging from 78.7 ng/L to 8592 ng/L in water and from 134 ng/g to 665 ng/g in sediment.Acetaminophen (ATMP),amantadine (ATD) and lincomycin (LIN) were detected at high concentrations in both water and sediment. The partition coefficients (lg
Kd) of detectable PPCPs at the water-sediment interface ranged from 1.33 L/kg to 4.70 L/kg,indicating a tendency for PPCPs to accumulate in sediment in this region. The sources of PPCPs in water and sediment were similar, being mainly derived from livestock and, aquaculture sewage, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater. This study provides fundamental data for the monitoring and early warning of PPCPs in water and sediment in Northwest China, and offers a critical scientific basis for decision-making on ecological protection in the Yellow River Basin.
